Archive > Cicada Cut Outs

I grew up in the south and every few years our summers drowned in cicadas. In my present, I've found cicadas an interesting case study in waiting. The ones in Kentucky spend seven years underground and live outside the soil for six weeks.

This project is another (much shorter) reflection of slow progress. Each cicada is a hand-printed linocut cut from paper. They are accumulations of slow meditative work. I started this project while I wrestled with a loss I didn't know what to do with. Whether to bury it or keep dwelling. In each swarm are words I fixated on while cutting.
